Frequently asked questions

What does it mean when an IPO is subscribed 10 times?

Investors have bid for ten times the shares on offer. In an oversubscribed IPO not everyone gets shares: retail allotment is done by lottery, so the higher the subscription, the lower your chance.

Which category should a small investor look at?

Retail. It is for individuals who apply for up to ₹2 lakh. NII (non-institutional investors) is for individuals and companies applying for more than ₹2 lakh, and QIB is for banks, mutual funds and other large institutions.

How often is the subscription status updated?

The exchanges publish bids during each bidding day. We refresh the figures every 30 minutes, and the final figures appear after bidding closes on the last day.

Does a high subscription mean a listing gain?

Often, but not always. Strong demand usually lifts the listing price, but market mood on listing day and the IPO’s valuation matter too. See the table above for how recent IPOs did.
